Dewald Potgieter

Dewald Potgieter has become a huge hero at Loftus Versfeld since he started playing for the Vodacom Bulls. He answered a couple of questions for www.bluebull.co.za
Tell us about your early years?
I grew up in Port Elizabeth, attended Charlo Primary and Daniel Pienaar HTS in Uitenhage. I played Craven Week for Eastern Province at u/13 level (in Pretoria) and u/18 for two years (Nelspruit and Bloemfontein). I captained the side in both years.
Have you played in the loose forward position only and which of the three do you prefer?
I will be able to give the final answer on that when I retire at 35! Ha Ha!
My first game ever was at no 8. We were only 15 guys who showed for our first u/9 match. After a couple of sprints, the coach picked the sevens fastest guys as the back line. He then picked the three biggest ones as the front row and I was picked last as number 8!
Who was your childhood hero?
Corné Krige. I likened myself to the hard-working grafting type of loose forward.
What did you do after matric?
I was contracted by the Bulls in standard nine already, so joined them straight after school. Away from rugby I am in the property market and play my guitar as much as I can.
When did you make your debut for the Vodacom Blue Bulls?
Currie Cup in 2007 at age 20 against Griquas (we lost in Kimberley). Super 14 was against Stormers in 2008 at Newlands. In 2007 I played a couple of Vodacom Cup matches as well.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
My selection to the Springboks in 2009 and our win in the Super 14 final against the Chiefs.
What are your goals for 2010?
Would love to be in the mix for the Springboks again and back to back Super 14 titles.
Are you and Jacques-Louis Potgieter family?
No, not at all. I am the only one in our family that is currently playing provincial rugby.
Your love of music, are you planning to start a group or cut a CD?
If I can have Wynand (Olivier) on the drums, I would consider it. And I need to know there will be a niche market for me. And maybe as soon as I meet the first groupie!
Favorite rugby stadium?
Loftus by far. Overseas I loved Wembley. I would love to play at Twickenham.
