Vodacom Blue Bulls pivot Mornè Steyn bounced back in spectacular fashion on Saturday when he delivered a Man of the Match performance for the Springboks against Argentina at Newlands in Cape Town.
The flyhalf kicked three conversions from difficult angles and two penalties to punish Argentina even further, but it was his tactical kicking and good distribution that silenced his critics, many of whom hailed from Cape Town media.
Steyn also had in hand in Zane Kirchner’s try in the first half, after delaying a pass to create the space for the Bok fullback to exploit.
Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer and Bok captain Jean de Villiers hailed Steyn afterwards.
“I expected Mornè to respond like this. That is the type of person he is,” Meyer said.
“He did not deserve the flak,” De Villiers said. “He has shown his critics they were wrong about him.”
