The Junior Boks midfielder and Vodacom Blue Bulls Vodacom Cup player showed why he was so highly rated even before the IRB Junior World Championship 2012 kicked off by dominating his opponents and received the IRB Junior Player of the Year Award 2012.
Serfontein scored four tries in the tournament and impressed all with his straight running and powerful surges. His try in the final against New Zealand was a fitting reward, not only for the player, but the team as well, as it clinched the gold medal for the South Africans.
“I am humbled by the award, but must credit everyone that was on the field with me. This was a team effort from the start, where everyone just worked so hard for the guy next to him. It is a special feeling for all of us,” Serfontein said afterwards.
“The forwards made the hard yards and the halfbacks created the space and quick ball that I could play with. I love the space to run and they made it possible.”
Serfontein not only hails from Springbok stock three generations ago with his great grandfather, Jack Slater, who played the last of his three tests for South Africa in 1928, his father Jan (Boelie) representing Eastern Province and brother Willem a former Blue Bulls junior captain and now playing for the Pumas.
