Player of the Week – Jan Serfontein
06 May 2012

His great grandfather, Jack Slater, played the last of his three tests for South Africa in 1928 in Durban and on Saturday young Jan Serfontein also made sure that the coastal city holds special memories.

The 19 year old midfielder scored under the posts in the dying seconds of the Vodacom Cup quarterfinal match between the Vodacom Blue Bulls and Sharks XV after a brilliant solo run and left an easy tap-over to Tony Jantjies to secure an unlikely win and a place in the semifinals of the competition.

The run left numerous Sharks XV defenders in his wake and the former SA Schools midfielder brought victory to his side that looked so unlikely only two minutes earlier.

A try then made the scores 30-36 in the home side’s favour, but few would have expected Serfontein’s brilliance to change all of that.

Serfontein not only hails from Springbok stock three generations ago, with his father Jan (Boelie) representing Eastern Province and brother Willem a former Blue Bulls junior captain and now playing for the Pumas.
