Great victory for Bulls 25 April 2009 (19:04) The Vodacom Bulls played their hearts out at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday to secure a hard fought, but brilliant 33-27 victory over the high flying Chiefs.
Derick Kuün opened the Bulls’ account with the first of their three tries in the 11th minute when he burst over thanks to his team keeping the ball through a number of phases. Morné Steyn added the conversion and the Bulls were leading 7-3 in spite of the fact that the referee awarded quite a number of free kicks in the opening minutes against them. The free kicks gave the Chiefs some momentum and it wasn’t long before Sione Lauaki scored the Chiefs’ first try, but Morné Steyn slotted a neat drop goal seconds after Lauaki’s try which meant that the Bulls were drawing level at 10 all after 19 minutes. Kuün was on a role and shortly after Steyn’s drop goal he intercepted a pass from Toby Morland and run nearly half the length of the field to score a spectacular try which took the Bulls into a 17-10 lead. Donald narrowed the gap with a penalty in the 26th minute but six minutes later the Chiefs were down to 14 men after Lauaki received a yellow card as a result of a dangerous high tackle on Bryan Habana. Unfortunately the Bulls could not initially use the extra man to their advantage and three minute before the break the visitor’s centre Callum Bruce dived over for a soft breakaway try to make the score 20-all, but in the last minute of the first half Wynand Olivier scored the Bulls third try to take his team into a 27-20 lead. Steyn added two more penalties, but the Chiefs got their claws back in the game in the 61st minute when Richard Kahui cut through the midfield to make the score 33-27. The last 20 minutes was gut wrenching but the Bulls did very well to keep the Chiefs at bay and our team must be complimented with the way they defended against the New Zealanders. Every single member of the Bulls, from Zane Kirchner at the back to Gurthro Steenkamp in the front row did his part and it was quite evident that the team specifically focused on doing the small things 100 percent correctly. All in all it was a stupendous victory which places the Bulls in the second spot on the log. Well done boys, it takes some doing to beat the Chiefs! Scorers:
Vodacom Bulls: Tries: Derick Kuün (2), Wynand Olivier. Conversions: Morné Steyn (3)
