Vodacom Blue Bulls ready to front up in defence of Currie Cup

 The Vodacom Blue Bulls start their defence of the Absa Currie Cup at Loftus Versfeld against the Barloworld Toyota Pumas, who also had some success last year by winning the First Division and were promoted to the top tier competition.
The Blue Bulls are back at their beloved Loftus Versfeld as well after regaining ownership of their stadium utilised by FIFA during the Soccer World Cup, writes Pieter Jordaan in Beeld.
With the Bulls’ pioneering work at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto now something of the past, they are eager to put on a show for spectators at Loftus Versfeld again.
They have to do it under the leadership of Gary Botha, who is back in the light blue jersey after a lengthy absence.
“Soweto was incredible for us and we enjoyed the journey. But ultimately Loftus remains a special place for the Bulls,” said Botha.
“Even so, we take pride in our ability to play a good game at any venue.”
The likes of Botha, Derick Kuün, John Mametsa and Jaco van der Westhuyzen have a big role to play leadership roles in a young Bulls side.
“The guys have to do their bit. The days are over where we can reflect on most of our Springboks being away,” said the skipper.
The performance of the new halfback pairing of Ruan Snyman and Jacques-Louis Potgieter will be of particular significance for the coaching team.
Jimmy Stonehouse has done wonders as coach of the Pumas, but a win over the Bulls at Loftus is wishful thinking. Some of his key players are on the bench because of injuries.

Former Bulls, then Cheetah, then Bulls again flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter may well be on his way to the Sharks after the 2010 edition of the Currie Cup.
Yesterday, Blue Bulls Company High Performance manager Ian Schwartz confirmed that the former Affies star had approached his current employers to inform them that the coastal union has shown an interest in his services, and that he was seriously considering the move.
The reason that the flyhalf was unhappy at the Bulls came after Springbok flyhalf Morne Steyn extended his contract at the Bulls, shutting out any hope of decent game time at next year’s Super 15.
“Jacques-Louis has spoken to us about the possibility of him leaving to join the Sharks but we haven’t heard of anything concrete yet. I can understand why he would want to leave because he is not getting enough game time but there is nothing we can do about it because he is playing behind the world’s best flyhalf. He probably feels that he will remain number two for as long as Morne is here and he wants to obviously play as a number one. I can understand that and that is why we signed him because we believe that he is a very good player,” said Schwartz yesterday.
Potgieter, who played extremely well for the Cheetahs last season, only signed a one year contract with the Bulls, and will thus be free to sign with any union come end October 2010. This signing could be crucial for the Sharks who lack quality depth at both the flyhalf and centre positions. Potgieter has played a lot of his rugby at both 10 and 12 and could be exactly what the Sharks need.

42. Geluk manne met die eerste wen. Dis bonuspunte en dit was 'n tuisgame wat 'n wen ononderhandelbaar gemaak het.
Goeie en briljante eerste halfuur, maar wat daarna gebeur het oet ons liefs aan die span oorlaat. Voet van die pedaal af of Pumas wat beter as ons was? Of die Bulle het gedink aan saterdag se braaivleis met 'n lekker biertjie in die hand. Anyway die agterlyn kan dodelik wees en die lostrio was ysters.
Mabeta kort oemf en 'n stokkie dinamiet as hy sukses op hierdie vlak wil bereik in al die fassette van slotspel. " Goeie naam is beter as reukolie maar die geskiedenis vertel verhale van 'n Hilton Lobberts. En die voorry het na die super 14 vergeet om te skrum teen 'n vodacom span. En sommiges moet of leer uitgee of met meel aan hul hande speel. Beslutineming op die veld, is waarskynlik die grotste groeiproses van hierdie span. Dis ongelukkig nie iets wat ryp gerduk gaan word nie.
Toegegee, dit was eerste game, en die voordeel uit hierdie vertoning is dat ons weet ons is nie die beste nie, maar dat daar baie ruimte vir groei is. Taktiese skopwerk, een vd Bulle se sterkpunte, was gisteraand bitter power asook ons lynstaanspel en skrumwerk. Ons lywe sal vanoggend die Pumas voel.

46. Bergbok, ek het nogal dieselfde ding gedink vanoggend... ons het 2 spanne in die finaal v/d s14 gehad. Ons het meeste van die NZ spanne gewen in die s14, maar dan wen hulle ons met 20punte en 4 drieë teenoor 0. Voorwaar 'n pakslae... een groot verskil, en volgens my die rede dat ons verloor het, is dat daai span nie bestaan uit Bulle en Stormres spelers nie! Vra jouself, het Februarie die Stormers gehelp om te kom waar hulle gekom het vanjaar? Het Jean de Villiers of Butch James dalk gehelp? En wat van Smith? Waar was John Smith se span? Ek reken dat as jy slegs daai spelers vervang met s14 2010 sterre, behoort ons die AB's enige dag op enige plek te kan klop!
Maar net my beskeie opinie.
