The Vodacom Bulls will be looking to continue their push for top spot on the combined Vodacom Super Rugby log when they host the Kings on Saturday.
The Brumbies currently top the table with only one game to play, but it is the Chiefs that pose the biggest threat to the Bulls ambitions.
The Brumbies have 59 points and the Bulls will join them on that figure if they beat the Kings with a bonus point. They will go ahead based on games won so they have their destiny in their own hands when it comes to finishing ahead of the Brumbies.
The Chiefs are currently on 56 points, two clear of the Bulls and both teams have 10 victories and three games left to play. The Chiefs have a tough run, starting with the Hurricanes at home before road trips to Christchurch and Auckland. If the Bulls can win their remaining three matches against the Kings and Sharks at Loftus and the Stormers in Cape Town then any slip by the Chiefs will see them finishing top of the table, securing a home semifinal and potentially final.
They will go into the game against the Kings knowing that a bonus point victory is a must, and at the same time they would do well to keep their eye on points differences. There has been no team news at the time of writing, but it is expected that all of the Bulls Boks will be thrown straight back into Super Rugby action – with the exception of Captain Pierre Spies (out for the rest of the season, with a bicep tear), Arno Botha and Jano Vermaak. The Bulls have won seven successive matches and before the break they beat the Cheetahs 30-25 in Bloemfontein (they have won all six of their home matches).
The Kings will have one eye on the playoff double header against the Lions in July but there is little doubt they will fight hard to try and beat one of the local teams before the season ends. In their previous road trips to play derbies they have gone down by eight points to the Stormers and 14 points to the Cheetahs.
Head to Head
The Bulls picked up all five points winning 34-0 in Port Elizabeth earlier in the season.
We can’t look past the Bulls here and while the Kings may give some cheek, the home team will get on top and then cut loose. With points difference possibly a factor there should be no stepping off the gas after the 4th try.
