Mornè Steyn confirm move to France
04 March 2013

The Blue Bulls Company and Mornè Steyn would like to confirm that the Vodacom Bulls flyhalf will be leaving Pretoria for Paris at the end of the 2013 rugby season.

Steyn has decided to take up an offer from Stade Francais in France and will join them till June 2016, but will see out his contract with the BBC, which expires on October 31st, 2013.

Steyn was contracted to the BBC since 2003 and has decided to broaden his horizons after a decade with the Vodacom Bulls and Vodacom Blue Bulls, which saw him win numerous titles at Vodacom Super Rugby, Absa Currie Cup, Vodacom Cup and junior levels.

As a Vodacom Bulls player, Steyn was also picked to become a Springbok and up to date, has played in 42 test matches, scoring 486 points.

According to the 28 year old pivot, it was time for a change.

“I have invested so much of my life with the Bulls, so it was a very tough decision to make. I basically owe everything I achieved in rugby to them, but the opportunity to join Stade comes at the right time in my career. I always wanted to play some rugby abroad and experience a different lifestyle and now have the opportunity to go and do that,” said Steyn.

“They have been negotiating with me for a while now and I have decided not to accept the offer from the BBC to extend my contract, but rather join Stade.”

Commenting on this, Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke gave Steyn his blessing.

“I don’t think anyone can doubt or question the loyalty that Mornè has shown to us. He has given everything he had for ten years now and one cannot fault his decision to expand his horizons. We will forever be grateful to have a player like that in our generation and can only wish him the best. He will be missed as he is a world class player, but I know that he will still be giving us 110% till the end of his term.”

BBC High Performance Manager Xander Janse van Rensburg confirmed that they offered Steyn an extension to his contract, but could not match the lucrative French offer

“Mornè also indicated to us that he will use the remainder of his time here to mentor our junior crop of flyhalves coming through, which is something we are very pleased about.”

Morné Steyn (born 11 July 1984 in Cape Town) is a South African rugby union player who plays at the Flyhalf position. He plays at number 10 for the Springboks internationally, as well as for the Bulls in Super Rugby[3] and for the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup. He was member of the team that won the 2009 Super 14, ending the season as the leading point scorer,[4] and setting a record of 4 drop goals in one single match, in the semifinal against the Crusaders.[5]
Steyn has won an U-21 World Cup, 2 Currie Cups, 3 Super rugby titles and 1 Tri-Nations.

The Springboks
During early 2009, Springbok coach Peter de Villiers made no secret of preferring Ruan Pienaar in the Springbok number 10 jersey despite Steyn performing very well in the Super 14 tournament. Steyn was on the replacement bench during the second Test of the 2009 British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa, when Pienaar's kicking game disintegrated. Steyn made a huge impression when he replaced Pienaar and immediately slotted two conversions and two penalties – including one from 53m out in the dying minutes of the game, which gave the Springboks the match and the series in dramatic fashion.
On 1 August 2009 the Springboks won their match versus New Zealand in the 2009 Tri Nations Series in Durban with a score of 31–19. Steyn scored all of South Africa's 31 points (8 penalty kicks and a converted try).[6] This broke quite a few records, amongst them the record for the most points by an individual in a Tri Nations match – previously held by Andrew Mehrtens with his score of 29 against Australia in 1999 (One conversion and nine penalties). During this match Steyn also had one drop goal attempt come off the upright and pushed one more penalty wide of the posts. This was while earning his fifth Test cap and only his second start for the Springboks.
Morne Steyn scored the most points by an individual player in the 2011 Rugby World Cup, where he procured 62 points.

Pink Bulls and refs clash

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Brenden Nel 04 March 2013, 12:20

With so much pink abounding on the rugby fields, it wasn’t surprising that it would clash at some stage or other.

This will happen this week when the Vodacom Bulls fly in to Auckland to face off with the Blues in their Vodacom Super Rugby game.

But the clash won’t be with the opposing team, even though both have blue kits, but rather with the referees.

Referees this year have worn pink as their outfits thanks to a new sponsor in New Zealand and with the Bulls again deciding to don their pink “away” kit during this year’s tournament, there was a distinct possibility the 16th man would literally become the 16th man in pink.

But with Sanzar alerted to the clash, referees boss Lyndon Bray confirmed to supersport.com that the referee would change his kit to a white shirt and black shorts for the clash.

“The referee would have to change in such an instance,” Bray confirmed to supersport.com.

The move did catch Sanzar by surprise, with officials needing to find out if there was indeed “an alternative kit” for the referee.

The ref in question, Garat Williamson from New Zealand, will have the whistle in white this weekend then.

Dit wil my voorkom of Ulrich daar kans gaan kry op hoofsaaklik 15.

Ja. Ek verwag n nagmerrie toer.

Dis maar net realisties.

All the best for the future Morne, may you achieve the success that Derek Hougaard, Gary Botha, Pedre and Bakkies have achieved overseas. What is a concern to me is that Zane is not performing to the best of his ability as of late as he is often out of position and his defense is in question, so do we have depth at full back. Also a concern is that will Loius be able to achieve the accolades that Morne has achieved, big boots to fill?

-As dinge begin taai raak.

@4: I am not sure we should see it as an exodus. Rather the normal cycle of life. It is just a pity that it did not happen a year or so later, as I don't think our current replacements for Morne and Juandre is completely ready yet. .. Maybe willing, but not so sure about the ready and able...

Another huge loss to this team - when is this exodus going to end. I am so so sorry that Morne has decided to also leave now - he is (and always has been) my favourite player. Even when he lost form and everyone was slating him I was always on the other end of the keyboard defending him. Well - best of luck Morne - I personally am not a happy person to hear this. You are simply the best !!
