WP and Blue Bulls in Under-19 final
22 October 2012

It is a North-South affair in the Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship final in Durban on Saturday where the Vodacom Blue Bulls and DHL Western Province will face each other to claim the title as best young provincial team of the year.

It is fitting for the two outfits to meet in the final, as they were the two best teams through-out the season and the log reflected that domination. In fact, WP (50 points) and the Blue Bulls (47 points) were way ahead of KwaZulu-Natal (38) and the MTN Golden Lions (34), who were the other semi-finalists on the weekend.

Province dispatched of the latter 24-14 in Stellenbosch on Saturday and the Blue Bulls had to come from behind against the team from Durban to eventually run out comfortable 46-35 winners at Loftus Versfeld.

In head to head clashes, WP has the edge, as they have won both league fixtures this season. On 28 July they beat the visiting Blue Bulls 20-16 following a late try at DHL Newlands and on 14 September won by 38-35 in a pulsating match at Loftus Versfeld.

This time however, the winner will be determined at the neutral Mr Price Kings Park in Durban.

With Junior Boks coach Dawie Theron and his national selectors in attendance, there will also be places up for grabs in the extended national Under-20 training squad that will be picked ahead of preparations for the defence of their IRB Junior World Championship title next year in France.

The kick-off is at 12h00 and will be screened live on SuperSport1.

We need a brave coach with vision and some Balls! That Sharks backline is pretty young, but it doesn't matter. Also WP have used very young players in the backline with great effect. The senior side should be watching videos of the O'21's and Craven Week side and feel embarrased!

Sadly the Bulls pecking order at 10 at the moment looks something like this....
1.Morne Steyn
2.Louis Fouche
3.Lionel Cronje
4.Tony Jantjies
5.Francois Tredoux
Oh dear me if we want to play running rugby then this needs to change.

I'd go with
1.Lionel Cronjé
2.Jurgen Visser
3.Tony Jantjies
4.Morne Steyn
5.Francois Tredoux.
6.Joshua Stander
7.Tiaan Schoeman
8.Willie du Plessis

9.Louis Fouche is very talented at kicking the ball but when it comes to running rugby sjoe he can not read the game. Please go back to the leopards thank you.

Vodacom backline: 15. Brits, 14. Skosan, 13. Swanepoel/van Rensburg, 12. Bosch, 11. Ismael, 10. Pollard, 9 van Rooyen, bench: Schoeman/Jantjies, Temperman and Swanepoel/van Rensburg. In two teams I've excluded Morne, Wynand, Zane and Akona. That's how many great young players we have! I will make room for Mapoe in the S15 side - I've always been scared of him when he plays against the Bulls. Unfortunately we are too conservative and stick with players out of form who've served well in the past. We will lose young players and keep on being a laughing stock.

@Muzi, I'll support your team choices, not such a joke by far. I like your choice of Jan Serfontein at outside centre, kzn bull also suggested that a while ago. Your scrumhalve in the Vodacom Cup, Rudi Van Rooyen? You didnt mean Rudi Page?

Paarlbul, I will show Kirschner the door as well. You're forgetting Adendorf at 6, Liebenberg probably more a 7. I will also show W Steenkamp the door. He has never delivered any of the promise he showed as a Junior Bull. He reminds me of Shaddow who's still mediocre at WP. We have enough good players to have a young but excellent Vodacom Cup side. Winning that trophy is a good stepping stone. JJ Engelbrecht will be great if he gets enough time at wing. How about 15. Beyers, 14 JJ, 13. Small Smith 12. Venter, 11. Basson, 10. Visser, 9. Vermaak with Hougaard, Cronje and Serfontein on the bench to get game time each game! I really think some of the old dogs have had their day. They won't adapt well to a new gameplan. We should have been working with this combo in the CC already, but we've wasted that opportunity.

@Paarlbul
IMHO if we do not give Serfontein,Small Smith,Janse van Rensburg and co a chance soon they will pack their bags and go.
Look what happened to Stander he was clearly unhappy being at the back of the pecking order.
Dries Swanepoel is already breaking down he has a long way to go.

I'll select a squad of 30 players for the S/15 and give all of them gametime, because the S15 is a gruelling afare and we do have good enough players. We must however get the RIGHT coach!!!!
1 - Mellet, Greyling (he needs awake call) Backup D Steyn ,Schoeman for later
2 - Mbonambi, Ralipelle, - Backup Visagie
3 - Kirsten, v/d Merwe - backup Kruger
4 - Flip, P Willemse - backup M Williams
5 - J Kruger, W Steenkamp - backup Orie
6 - Dewald, Stegman - backup - Liebenberg (lots of potential)
7 - Cook, J Potgieter (must be trained to focus)
8 - Spies, Botha
9 - Vermaak, Hougaard - let then play their natural game (Hougaard is not going to stay too long)
10 - Beyers, Visser - newcomer Pollard - (Cronje is not going to stay too long - hys g..tvol)
11 - Basson, JJ, Ismael (he's got alot of talent - big and strong)
12 - Venter, Serfontein
13 - Olivier, Small-Smith - backup Swanepoel
14 - Ndungane, Mapoe, Skosan
15 - Kirschner, Brits
Lots of talent - we just need to adapt to new gameplan and have ATTITUDE.

Muzi #20 and #21: What about Dawie Steyn? Do you really think Schoeman is better than him?

Muzi

You are definitely a rookie-pusher and out of the box guy! I like it.

My view on Jan Serfontein: Forget about playing him on 13. Jan must be close to the game and is a decision maker. The Bulls are looking there at Mapoe, Small Smith and JJ. JJ is very inconsistent in terms of pressure and sometimes like the Lions and Province games, he comes through remarkably, but other times, like Saturday, he chokes. JJ needs time on the wing but you need to play him from the shoulder of the scrummie. He is very dangerous and gains a lot of field position. he serves as a third ball carrier. Saturday he made a clomplete hash of it. It was his worse game I've seen him played, but he is not finished. th Bulls just need to make their minds up of what they want to do with JJ. As for Venter - no centre would look good with the amount and quality ball that our CC team recieved this season. Venter is being moulded into a stampkar ball carrier. he has no choice.

Handre Pollard needs to be managed. he is currently recovering from an injury. If you going to force hm to paly superrugby in 2013 he will be finished for three seasons. Pollard is in terms of weight and strenght and intelligence defintely super material, but 2013 will not be his year, maybe for Currie Cup.

Some one will fall away from the Bulls over next season: Blommetjies, Mastriet, Beyers or Visser. Both Blommetjies and Mastriet impressed me a lot in the CC. Beyers had one on one off, but I agree he is better at full back and I will include hom as a second kicker.

I don't think Mellet is better than Wors, and I am not sure about Marcel vd Merwe. he didn't impressed me that much at the Cheeetahs, not as dominating as I hoped. I watched him closely. good ball carrier though.

My view is that Tony Jantjies can't be worse than Fouche. He has come through the ranks and give him a chance, and also bloody Lionel Cronje. What on earth are we creating at the bulls with the nr. 10's. The Cronje debate is a real shocker and embarrasmment to the coaching management. Morne Steyn is suffering from severe mental fatigue and his was relentlessly applied over a period of 3 seasons.

Muzi, I am sure you complied your teams in a hurry, because a few names are forgotten. What I would like to mention first though and where I disagree, are the flyhalves. Morne is past his sell by date. The Bulle MUSt move forward and with Morne and Fouche that will not happen. There is quite a list of players that can grow into this position - Cronje, Visser, Pollard, Schoeman (his better than I initialy thought)
However somebody that they should try out as flyhalf, which have all the attributes - goalkicking, out of hand kicking, speed of the mark, aggressive defense, playing to ball carriers, reading of the game and somebody that might give the Bulls a balance of attacking and kicking rugby - Ulrich Beyers.
In addition to that is that the 2 position he played so far is heaps of other talent:
Fullback - Visser, Riaan Brits, Blommetjies, Kirschner.
Outside centre: Small-Smith, Dries Swanepoel, Skosan, and then a big prospect for not to far future - Rohan Janse van Rensburg!! All young players but players that are GOOD enough!

Muzi, you left out Jurgen Visser out of both teams? Also Lionel Mapoe who is on loan from the Lions and probably the best straight running back in SA? You've also got Jacques du Plessis in the starting lineup and bench - I'm sure you can find a place for Mike Williams?
Posted by Blou Vlam on 23 October 2012 11:08

@24 Blyblou Maybe the answer is Lionel Mapoe on outside centre for now. He is also a loan agreement player that I don't see anywhere in Muzi's 2 teams.

@20 and 21 Muzi I see Akona Ndungane does not feature anywhere too. The BBRU has extended his contract for antother 2 years, so they reckon he will be used somewhere..... I personally thought he might be moving to the Kings next year as the Eastern Cape is his home turf....

Like your teams Muzi. In your S15 team my only concern would be the centre pairing - having two incide centres. But I don't reaaly have a good alternative - since we never had a real outside centre since Jaco Pretorius started having injury problems. JJ Engelbrect definitely does not have the hands or defence to be used there. I have hope that Small Smith will become the real deal, but I will also let him play one year in the Vodacom team before he moves to the S15 side.

In your Vodacom team I would be tempted to move Wiaan Liebenberg to 7 and play Shaun Adendorf at 6 - exactly like in the current u/21 squad. Hattingh didn't impress me in the couple of games I saw him play. And then I would make room for Franco Mostert in the Vodacom side - not sure whether either Orie or Du Plessis (who features in your run-on side and on the bench) are currently better than him.

The Vodacom Cup team.

1.Dean Greyling - sadly he's a liability he needs a wake up call.
2.Bongi Mbonambi
3.Werner Kruger - let's be honest he's not the answer at tighthead for the Bulls.
4.Jacques du Plessis
5.Wilhelm Steenkamp
6.Wiaan Liebenberg
7.Grant Hattingh
8.Jean Cook
9.Rudi van Rooyen - this kid can jol
10.Tony Jantjies
11.Sampie Mastriet
12.Francois Venter
13.William Small Smith
14.Clayton Blommetjies'

17.Juan Schoeman

Goeie agterlyn @15. Hy is 'n voetballer.

My moed sak sommer as ek daaraan dink.

Twyfel of hy nog langer as n jaar by Bulle gaan wees.

Lambie, is volgens my, die beste nr. 10 in SA.
