‘Never give up, Never give in’ - Voltbet
19 October 2012

The Vodacom Blue Bulls did it, they managed to tackle their way out of the relegation/ promotion match to place fourth on the Currie Cup log and qualify for the semifinals. The Bulls secured their place by thrashing the Golden Lions 50-29 in a thrilling match. Many would say that they could see it happening but that doesn’t mean that we weren’t all watching in anticipation with very little nail beds remaining when the final whistle blew.

The slate will be wiped clean tomorrow when the Vodacom Blue Bulls meet the Sharks at the Shark Tank for the first of the Currie Cup semifinal matches. Pine Pienaar has named an unchanged side for the clash relying on his returning Springboks to provide the experience and high impact rugby that the Bulls fans are accustomed to. The Sharks have made a number of changes, including Springboks Lwazi Mvovo and Jannie du Plessis in the starting XV with Beast and Alberts playing off the bench. The Sharks have had a good season only losing three of their seven games compared the Bulls who have won five and lost five of their matches. That is not to say that the Bulls cannot pull this one out of the bag but they will need to step up a gear defensively and expect a close match. Many are backing the Sharks for the win but at Voltbet we believe that the Bulls have what it takes and they have not given up.

We wish the Vodacom Blue Bulls all the best for their game at the Shark Tank and we anticipate a high impact, full eighty minute game. We hope that all the preparation and experience pays off to take the Bulls into the Currie Cup finals next weekend.

Ai tog, ek weet, as ek wakker word is my koffie koud... (Sien net drie!)

Ek wonder as ou Spies waai of iemand hom sal mis.

Ek kyk eerder sonder klank as Stransky kommentaar lewer.

Good Morning All

I found this gem on news24, I kept on looking for the punch line. I wnder what he owes Stransky? Enjoy Bulls fans.

Rob Houwing’s 'Tops on the Telly' column
Whatever you think of his broader merits as a commentator, the one key thing I believe Joel Stransky routinely gets spot-on is to detach himself firmly from any obvious partisanship.

I’ve been reminded of that again in the past few weeks, where his contribution behind the SuperSport rugby mike - usually as the comments- and perspectives-geared “No 2” to a lead commentator - has shone brightly in that regard.

It’s a global phenomenon in broadcasting, I’d suggest, for fairly recent players who’ve switched to TV analysis of the game, to still have a subconscious (and sometimes even less subtle than that) foot in the team camp they’ve just departed from.

That is partially understandable, given the familiarity factor and the ability to pinpoint tactical issues through still largely first-hand knowledge.
It’s one reason for being able to forgive Victor Matfield, perhaps, for his Bulls-leaning tendencies in examination of their games - though we shouldn’t do so forever!

But given his suitably well-travelled status and the fact that he is now 45 and well out of the first-class loop, former Bok flyhalf Stransky - Natal, WP, plus Italian and English clubs - pleasingly shows no obvious leanings and calls situations firmly and sans favour, right across the board.

If he feels one team has had the benefit of a really dubious refereeing call their way, for example, you can bet that later in the game he will be just as caustic if a verdict of that nature goes the other direction.

One recommendation I have for SuperSport, by the way, is that they split their pretty routine two-person English commentary “teams” a little more often: for the Currie Cup semi-finals on Saturday we again have the Matt Pearce-Bob Skinstad alliance for Sharks v Bulls, and then Hugh Bladen and Joel Stransky for the game between the Lions and Western Province.

I know it is probably logistically convenient for SuperSport to stick to the status quo, but every now and then, Pearce-Stransky and Bladen-Skinstad would be a welcome switch in pairings, wouldn’t it?
